The Effects of Coffee

Is it affecting you?

Coffee has become quite the rage in our society today. Though there are many people who do not like it, those who do, most certainly love it! Coffeehouses are everywhere we look, and continuously popping up around us to make sure that we always have a place to grab a quick cup. So what is it that drives this coffeehouse takeover? Is it fueled by desire because it actually tastes good; or is it fueled by addiction? In either case, it does not matter. It comes down to your way of thinking about the subject as to how you will answer that question, but what we do know is that it is happening.

Personally, I think it is a combination of desire for taste, and the addiction; but, perhaps it is the addiction to the energy jolt and the favor of the taste that makes it the drink of choice for many—instead of say, soda or tea. The popularity of the product mounts so high there is little to offer comparison. As with many pleasures in the world today, we face the chance that it usually does more harm than good for us. So, which is it? Is coffee good or bad for our body, and why?

Frankly the reason we see so many conflicting studies on any given substance pretty much boils down to who paid the researchers off to prove what first. So, because we cannot ever really be sure of anything we are told by the professionals until we experience proof of it in person (and many ailments cannot be traced back solely to a coffee addiction, and therefore it may be tossed in with the cause) we must judge for ourselves and run with it.

Bottom line always seems to be for everything we do, and everything we consume. So, you will not be surprised when I say that you should drink coffee in moderation. A cup or two a day will not hurt you. And, though you may not believe me, I have seen people drink more than a pot on a daily basis. Many people drink it from the moment they wake, until they go to bed, which is a habit similar to that of an alcoholic; given the suggestion of addiction.

To be fair, we are going to look at both the positive aspects of drinking coffee, and the negative effects of drinking coffee. With this evidence, take it upon yourself and how you gauge these effects’ severity to determine your answer.

* Coffee stains your teeth. Cutting back on your intake is cheaper than wasting money on the teeth whiteners on the market.

* Coffee raises your stress levels. Drinking too much of the stuff raises your anxiety levels, which is never good.

* Coffee causes bad breath. Don’t believe me? Find a heavy drinker, and take a whiff for yourself. Point proven.

* Coffee may be a cause in the increased risk of a heart attack. More anxiety translates to higher blood pressure which heightens the risk.

* It may lower your sperm count and/or cause sterility. Sounds crazy, though it’s true!

* It may create, or exasperate stomach problems. Stomach lining irritation that occurs is likely attributed to caffeine content.

And now, for the good news.

* It helps to prevent prostate cancer. Right up there with sterility, this is strange. Boron, a chemical necessary for prostate health is found in coffee.

* It is a great social drink, as an alternative to the obviously more detrimental alcohol. You can also use the coffeehouse to increase your circle of friends!

* Coffee aids you in the digestion process, maybe. Though there has yet to be any scientific proof, it certainly does a good job at washing down your meals. In some cultures it is considered rude to finish your food without a cup of coffee.

Even though you can see the staggering difference in total number of pros and cons, it is still your personal opinion and decision as to how much coffee to drink. If you think you are drinking too much, try cutting back a bit gradually or switching to a decaf version to reduce the effects of caffeine.
